Kitching has been described as the grandee of woodletter printing. Alan Kitching work as a printer began with the founding (with Anthony Froshaug) of the experimental printing workshop at Watford College of Technology, School of Art in 1964. He established his own design practice London in 1973 and started letterpress printing with Derek Birdsall at Omnific in 1985. Kitching established The Typography Workshop in Clerkenwell EC1 (1989) and Type Cases is one of the most celebrated productions from that period. It demonstrates, on a large scale, Kitching’s bold, energetic and theatrical style. It made an impact then and still does now.
