The Sonnets of Michel Angelo Buonarroti and Tommaso Campanella now for the first time translated into rhymed English
London: Smith Elder. 1878.

First edition. pp. 212. 25 page introductory essay by Symonds. Symonds's work was the first time that the original genders were used in any edition of Michelangelo's poetry, earlier editions having used both genders to mask the homoerotic nature of the poetry. Michelangelo's grandnephew, Michelangelo the Younger, published them in 1623 with the gender of pronouns changed. Original navy blue cloth cover, some tears to the head of the spine and looseness to the inside hinges. Otherwise a near fine copy with contents in excellent condition.
