The Compleat Marksman: or The True Art of Shooting-Flying: A PoemCOOTE, Hon. Robert
London: Printed for C. Henderson. n.d. [1760?].
Second edition. 8vo in 4s. pp. , 36. Eighteenth century parchment boards. Staining and marking to boards and a small tear to the parchment on the lower corner of the upper cover. First two leaves are stained, closely trimmed at head, some spotting and light staining. Final two leaves with tears to hinges but still attached. Overall a nice copy in good condition of this rare book. ESTC locates only four copies (Bodleian, Harvard (Houghton), Yale (Sterling), National Library of Australia).
This light and amusing poem on the joys of shooting is recorded by ESTC has having been first published anonymously by S. Smith in 1759 with this second, undated edition, appearing under the imprint of C. Henderson and the authorship of Robert Coote. However, the Whitehall Evening Post (or London Intelligencer) of 6th March 1756 records Henderson’s edition with Coote named as the author as having been published that day. Either there is an unrecorded earlier edition or, this edition, thought to have been dated in 1760 as a second edition, is, in fact, the first edition.
