The Blessings of PolygamyHILL, Richard
London: sold by J. Mathews; C. Dilly [both in London]; and by J. Eddowes, in Shrewsbury. 1781.
First edition. 8vo, (230 by 142mm) pp. 171. Errata slip pasted to the foot of the last page of text. Uncut in original blue-gray boards, neatly rebacked and labelled to style. Upper outer edge of upper board damaged with small loss, sporadic foxing, still a very good copy. Now with clear acetate protective wrapper. Very good.
This provocatively titled book is dedicated to “All good Wives in the Kingdom”. Madan’s notorious defence of polygamy, reluctantly but forcefully refuted here by his friend (”the doctrine it advances is totally repugnant to scripture, and is calculated to do irreparable mischief in the church of God, and to the world in general”), raised a storm of protest and forced its author into early retirement.
