8vo. 150x95mm. pp.235. Sumptuously bound by Ramage in full green morocco. Upper lower and cover decorated in gilt with flower motifs surrounded by a wide border in a wavy line shape, the border thickly decorated gilt stars. Five raised bands to spine, six compartments decorated in gilt with a framed leaf motif surrounded by stars, save for second compartment which is lettered in gilt. All edges gilt. Cream watered-silk doublures and front free endpapers, turn-ins decorated in gilt flower and star pattern. Signed "Bound by Ramage" to foot of front turn-in. Very slight rubbing to front joint and a very small stain to the rear doublure but otherwise this is a beautiful example, in superb condition, of a Ramage binding with its delicate and inventive gilt tooling. Verso of front free endpaper has the book label of John Hely-Hutchinson, Chippenham Lodge, Ely. 1946. "Hely-Hutchinson rapidly developed into an energetic, and for a newcomer a most adventurous, participant in the revival of interest in the collecting of fine bindings" (A.N.L Munby, Introduction to the 1956 Sotheby's sale catalogue of Hely-Hutchinson's library). John Ramage was born in 1836 and began his apprenticeship in 1851. He worked in Paris before buying a business in Edinburgh in 1860. He moved to London in 1863 where the business continued in the family name until 1929.
