Picasso. An Idea becomes Sculpture. Variations on a Theme.

£650

Lucerne: Galerie Rosengart. 1970.

Inscription and original drawing by Roland Penrose "For Peggy with love Roland". Peggy is Guggenheim, the great patron and collector of twentieth century art. Hard to imagine a more stellar recipient of a book on Picasso.
178x123mm. ff.30. Preface by Roland Penrose. 26 images from a 1970 exhibition of Picasso's work, six of which are printed on gloss paper (130x100mm) and tipped in and the rest are printed direct onto the page. On a separate leaf is a copy of the Picasso drawing from the front cover. The front pastedown has a drawing of three flowers with the inscription.
Penrose first met Picasso in the 1920s and he organised the tour of Guernica in 1938 to London and then to Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester. That year he also had a (short-lived) affair with Peggy Guggenheim. They remained friends and this little exhibition catalogue is testimony to Penrose's artistic and personal links to two of the most important figures in modern art.
