First edition. Inscribed by Johnson. 311x236mm. pp. 192. Original illustrated paper covered boards. Dustjacket (with same illustration) protected by plastic wrapper. Boards are in very good condition although with slight bumping to the corners. The dustjacket is also very good but has some shelfwear and marking in places. Internally in excellent condition. Illustrated throughout with superb photographs and reproductions of drawings and plans by Johnson and Burgee. A nice copy.

The years covered by this book represent the first half of what has been called Philip Johnson’s “Postmodern Period”. Working with John Burgee on most of the projects, Johnson produced a large number of huge, ‘statement’ projects from the Crystal Cathedral in Southern California to the AT&T headquarters in Madison Avenue. As the postmodern tag implies, Johnson and Burgee’s work borrowed from many styles and historical periods including, classical Athens, 18th century England, the Gothic Revival, the Romanesque and Renaissance Florence. 1930s German architecture is absent but then Johnson’s celebrated interest in the aesthetics of Nazism was not so much for its architecture as for the sight of "all those blond boys in black leather".
