First edition. 8vo. (182x120mm) pp. [viii], 480. Original blue cloth decorated and lettered in blind to upper cover and in gilt to spine. Marking and fading on upper cover and rubbing and wear to corners. Internally very good with some foxing in places. First issue with page 187 misnumbered 871. A nice copy of one of Conrad’s most important books of which F Scott Fitzgerald said, “I’d rather have written Nostromo than any other novel”. The front free endpaper has the bookplate of Brian Fenwick-Smith (numbered 0187), illustrated with a white silhouette. Fenwick-Smith is a financier, industrialist, bibliophile and philanthropist who has donated rare manuscripts and books to his former college, St John’s Cambridge.
