Naturalistic Photography for Students of the Art
London: Samson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington. 1889.

First edition. 8vo. (200x125mm). pp. [vi, advertisements], xii, 308, 6, [10, advertisements]. Endpapers are also advertisements. Original cream cloth, lettered in black to spine. Soiling to upper cover and browning and some marking to spine. Contents in very good condition. Overall a nice copy of the first edition of this important work in which Emerson famously made the claim for photography as a "Pictorial Art", a claim he later rescinded in the 1899 third edition but not before amateur photographers had taken him at his word and begun to experiment with artistic techniques in their work. In many ways, Emerson's Naturalistic Photography was the book that opened up the world of art photography to the talented amateur, an influence that lasts today.
