In the Key of Blue and Other Prose Essays

London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane. 1893.

First edition, 8vo, 197x140. pp.[viii], 302, 15 ads, [1] imprint. Original cream cloth with elaborate art nouveau design and lettering to sides and spine, top edge gilt, others uncut, by Ricketts. Cloth evenly toned, light fraying to head and foot of the spine. A very good copy.

One of the classic book designs of the 1890s, done by Charles Ricketts for Lane and Matthews before they went their separate ways. Symonds, the leading apologist for homosexuality, died in the same year as the publication of “In the Key of Blue”.
