The Rodin/ Monet exhibition was the artistic highlight of the 1889 Paris Exhibition but very nearly did not take place. On the evening before it was due to open Rodin set up his monumental Burghers of Calais obscuring a wall of Monet’s paintings. Fortunately the tension this caused was overcome and the exhibition was an enormous success both critically and with the public.
