Chitra is beautiful short work based on a story from the Mahabharata, one of the two great Sanskrit epics. A contemporary critic described Chitra as "the crown of the first half of the poet's career" and it is a masterpiece of intellectual and aesthetic concision. Under the guise of a love story, it addresses ideas of gender identity, proto-feminism, beauty, truth, reality and appearance.
