Amsterdam Tijdens den Hongerwinter / Amsterdam During the Winter of Hunger
OORTHUYS, Cas, ANDRIESSE, Emmy et al
Amsterdam: Uitgeverij Contact / De Bezige Bij. 1947.
1st ed, small 4to. Unpaginated, illustrated throughout in B&W, top edge of text block black. Very Good wit some toning to margins and endpapers with a previous owner's pen inscription to the fep. In 1/4 bound black cloth over pale blue grey paper covered boards with gilt-stamped titles to lower half of upper board. In a Very Good and scarce example of the original photographic DJ - in plastic wraps - with three small closed tears to edges, expected shelfwear and spotting and toning to the rear cover. In a striking departure from the formalism of pre-war photography, this collection turned an unblinking eye on the hardships facing the Dutch people in the winter on 1944/5. A time when, coupled with a particularly ferocious winter, the slow process of liberation, together with German forces still occupying seaports led to starvation and hardship not witnessed in Europe since the Thirty Years War
