The Times Literary Supplement praised this picaresque fragment with "...the comedy is of the same order as, but generally superior to, that of Under Milk Wood". All Thomas's winning powers of lyricism and characterisation are here in this tantalisingly unfinished work, the closest he came to writing a memoir.
