Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
FITZGERALD, EdwardEdinburgh: T.N. Foulis. 1905.
130x93mm. pp. [44]. Bound by Pender of Edinburgh in a very pretty arts and crafts binding of green morocco decorated, on the upper cover, with a rambling red rose and leaf motif. Spine lettered in gilt and decorated with a single rose and leaf. Top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Title page and first page of text attractively chromolithographed in gold, red, green and blue. Inscribed to preliminary leaf "With best wishes for your birthday from Victoria Mary, June 1907". Victoria Mary is Mary of Teck who, in 1907, was the Princess of Wales, becoming Queen of England in 1910 when her husband acceded to the throne as George V. We do not know whose birthday present this was but it is a lovely little book with a nice Royal connection.
